There are so many Monster Hunter art books that it's difficult to remember what's in them sometimes.
モンスターハンターイラストレーションズ 2 is Monster Hunter Illustrations 2, the second volume concept art book for Monster Hunter. This is the concept art book for the game series.
The presentation style is similar to the earlier volume モンスターハンターイラストレーションズ (Monster Hunter Illustration). Two books come in a cardboard slipcase. The coloured illustrations book has 272 pages, and the sketches book has 128 pages. Also included are three bookmarks.
The games featured are Monster Hunter (tri-) 3, Monster Hunter (tri-) 3G, Monster Hunter Portable 2nd and Monster Hunter Portable 3rd.
There are plenty of art for the monsters, characters, weapons, armour and miscellaneous designs for symbols and other stuff. The monsters art has always been awesome. The characters wear outrageous armour and sometimes carry weapons bigger than themselves. The designs are pretty cool because they look organic as they are created from monster materials such as bones, teeth and leather.
The monochrome book is all sketches and features character art mostly. It's pretty cool to see how the line work evolve into the actual coloured version. Unfortunately, unlike the coloured book, the sketches are not labeled with the game they are for.
Overall, it's a fantastic two-book concept art book set for Monster Hunter fans and concept artists. Highly recommended.
Udon will be translating this book, and probably be releasing it in October 2013. You can pre-order using the Amazon links I've provided at the bottom of this review. Udon's translated Monster Hunter Illustration, the first book, was sold out pretty quickly. Or you can choose to get this Japanese edition. No knowledge of Japanese is required to enjoy the book since there's not much text.
Update: Udon has released the English edition. You can find the review at https://www.parkablogs.com/content/book-review-monster-hunter-illustrati...
