Watercolor Life: 40 Joy-Filled Lessons to Spark Your Creativity is 256-page hardcover artbook authored by Emma Block and published by Running Press.
Emma Block is a freelance illustrator and author based in London. Her two earlier books are The Joy of Watercolor and Get Started with Gouache. If you're interested in gouache, she also has an online art course on gouache on Domestika.
The book starts with the basics of watercolour such as the tools and supplies you'll need, basic colour theory and jumps straight into the painting exercises.
The tutorials are grouped according to techniques and subject matter, namely:
- Wet on wet
- Wet on dry
- Color pooling
- Masking fluid
- Expressive brushstrokes
- Painting people
- Decoratuve paintings
There's a good variety of subjects featured and the difficult level is varied depending on the complexity. The tutorials are split into different techniques to let you know the different ways of painting with watercolour. The examples are of course beautiful and you can see more of her art on her Instagram page.
Watercolor Life is very similar to her earlier book The Joy of Watercolor which is also a squarish hardcover artbook that's also published by Running Press and is also packed with 40 tutorials. This book is more of a sequel with 40 more watercolour tutorials. If you already have the earlier book and want more painting exercises, then this is the book for you. If you're just starting out, you can get either book.
