Special thanks to Patrick J. Jones for sending me a copy of his book to feature today.
This is the second book that I have of Patrick J. Jones. The first was Sci-Fi & Fantasy Oil Painting Techniques that was released a few years ago. This new book is just as good as his first one.
Jones is an amazing painter who focuses on sci-fi and fantasy art. In this 176-hardcover book, over 100 paintings created during the last 10 years are included. All the paintings are beautiful and it's a visual treat to go through them. The artworks are created with either oil paint or digitally. Personally, I wasn't able to tell the difference between them. Jones list Frank Frazetta and Boris Vallejo has his inspiration and I do see traces of influence in his work.
The paintings in the book are breathtaking. You just can't fault the technique. The way he captures the light and mood is terrific. He also uses professional models to get his lighting and anatomy correct. So that's the amount of dedication he put behind each piece of work. I can only imagine how much more beautiful the paintings are in real life.
The book includes an interview that talks about his childhood and how he got starting with painting. Every piece of work featured has a few paragraphs talking about the piece itself, the inspiration and afterthoughts. It's insightful and inspiring to go through the text reading about his creative process and the stories behind each piece.
This is a fantastic book that I can easily recommend to those who like paintings or fantasy art.
