Review: Uperfect Delta Pro Touch: Portable Dual-stacked Display

Uperfect has just launched two new dual-stacked touchscreen displays called Uperfect Delta Pro and Delta Max Pro Touch on the crowdfunding website Indiegogo.

The company has sent me their 16-inch prototype model for review purposes and my review is from the perspective of a visual content creator, someone who does graphic design, digital art, edits photos and videos.

The crowdfunding campaign will start on 20 May 2024. This product is probably not exclusive to the crowdfunding campaign but I don't have information regarding the future price vs crowdfunding price.

Just for comparison purposes, these are the prices other dual-stacked displays (non-touchscreen models) from Uperfect:

Only the Delta Pro 18 has 2560 x 1600 resolution while the other three have 1920 x 1200 resolution.

Bottom line

The Uperfect Delta Pro Touch is well designed and practical product. The 2560 x 1600 display is sharp, vibrant, bright and has good viewing angles. Refresh rate is 120Hz. There is touchscreen support and even pen support.

It is possible to use the dual displays with one USB-C video cable, but additional power may be needed to achieve maximum brightness.

Downside or limitation would be the lack of VESA mount. The pullout stand could be designed for an easier pullout. The display is as heavy as a 16-inch gaming laptop.

Design

Build quality of the product is solid with the metal body. The matte surface texture on the front and back is susceptible to fingerprints that it's not really worth cleaning since fingerprints will be back quickly.

The size of this display when folding is quite similar to a thick 16-inch gaming laptop, and the weight is quite similar too, heavy.

The built-in kickstand is convenient. Rubber feet can be found on the bottom of the kickstand and display. Since the display is heavy, the kickstand has to be propped up more vertically, or the weight will push the kickstand out, even with the grip of the rubber feet.

The hinge is quite strong and will hold the top display at any angle. Hopefully this will not become loose with usage over time.

Ports from the left to right are

• USB-C for power
• USB-C video
• mini HDMI
• USB-C video
• mini HDMI

There are two sets of USB-C and HDMI video ports, one for each display.

One USB-C video cable connection is able to power both displays and drive them at maximum resolution, but not at maximum brightness. To get maximum brightness, display has to be connected to additional power. The display can be used with a portable powerbank.

One HDMI cable connection will also require a power cable connection. Touchscreen will not work unless you connect another cable to your computer. So that's a total of three cables if you want to use the touchscreen. From my tests, I could only get the two displays to mirror when using one HDMI cable connection on Windows and MacOS. Extended desktop mode does not work, but the linked mode (2 displays 1 desktop) works.

On the other side, there are two sets of mode switch button, OSD directional toggle with press and 3.5mm audio jack, one for each display.

The mode switch button can switch between video input source and display modes:

• Duplicate: This is mirror mode
• Expansion: Extended desktop mode
• Sequence: Have one desktop across both display
• Standalone: Connect two separate computers or input sources to each display

Extended desktop mode is not available with one HDMI cable connection.

My prototype review unit could not get Auto Select to work so I have to manually select the input source. This will be an inconvenience if you switch between USB-C and HDMI. If you're just using one type of input source, the display will just use the previous input source.

Sequence or linked mode is a feature from the display and can be used with Windows or MacOS. This feature lets you have one desktop across both displays. You can run apps across both displays, or even videos (above) which of course does not look good due to the big gap between.

The directional toggle will let you scroll through the various display visual settings that you can change, e.g. brightness, contrast, colour temperature, etc.

One huge downside to the OSD menus is the timer for display mode switch is 5s and for the visual settings is 10s before the menu disappears due to inactivity. The company should have made the timer at least 20s.

Productivity gain

Having an extra display definitely improves productivity and with this product you get two extra displays. What I like is the display does not take up much space on the table.

If you need to have the display higher, you can get a laptop stand but make sure the latch/hook that lets the laptop rest on is BIG because this display is thick.

You can also get additional workflow advantages when using apps that are designed to work across multiple displays. For example with Adobe Lightroom, you can show the thumbnail on the bottom display and the larger photo on the top display. And since the displays are touchscreens, you can navigate through the thumbnails by just touching the thumbnails.

Some video editing apps such as Final Cut Pro and DaVinci Resolve can also work across multiple displays. You can have the controls on one display and the video viewer on the other.

When you just need one extra display or two extra displays really comes down to the type of work you do.

Visual quality

Visual quality of the display is good.

Factory calibration looks good so no additional colour calibration may be needed. I measured colour support for 100% sRGB, 79% NTSC, 83% AdobeRGB and 88% P3 with my Spyder X2 Ultra. Colours look vibrant and I would say it's suitable for creating graphics for the web. For creators who are particular about colour accuracy, just note that this is not a 100% AdobeRGB or 100% DCI-P3 display.

I measured a maximum brightness of 263 nits with power connected. With a single USB-C cable, brightness is 162 nits and increasing the brightness beyond that may cause the display to black out.

Each display has 2560 x 1600 resolution at 120Hz. There's slight pixelation from one arm's distance away but it's not chunky pixels and I would still consider the visuals to be sharp.

For MacOS users, 16-inch with 2560 x 1600 resolution is not a good combo. You may need to use BetterDisplay app to scale the UI properly with sharp visuals.

Is touchscreen useful?

Having a touchscreen is useful. If you don't use it, no problem, but it's there if you need it.

Windows OS works well with touchscreen since the early days when the Microsoft Surface Pro was launched in 2013. No driver is needed for touch features to work.

If touch does not work properly with Windows, you may have to go into Control Panel, Tablet PC Settings, to change certain settings. E.g. Tell Windows which is the display that supports touch and pen.

MacOS is not designed for touchscreens so features are lacking. When you touch the Uperfect display, the cursor will move on the laptop display and not under your finger. You have to move the cursor from the laptop display to the Uperfect display for the cursor to be beneath your finger.

Pen support

The included pen is quite well made and has solid build quality.

The pen is powered by one AAAA battery. It supports palm rejection, tilt and pressure sensitivity. I'm not sure what pen protocol is being used. I can't confirm whether it's USI 2 as I don't have another USI pen to test.

No pairing is needed with the display. There are two side buttons (that look like one button). Side button shortcuts will vary depending on the app you use, and most drawing or writing apps on Windows do not let you customise side button shortcuts. There is no eraser on the pen.

The pen tip is plastic and is quite smooth on the glass.

Writing performance is good provided you don't rest your palm on the display because palm rejection feature does not work consistently, unfortunately. Same applies to drawing.

It is possible to draw on the display and the kickstand will actually deploy at a comfortable angle for drawing.

Initial activation force is low enough so pressure sensitivity works quite well. However, there is slight wobble with slow diagonal lines. I don't see any issues with my normal drawing speed though. Anyway, I don't usually recommend pen displays that use USI 2 pens for drawing as they are not as accurate compared to Apple Pencil, Wacom EMR pen and MPP2 pens, or other proprietary pens.

Downsides

For a display this thick, I was surprised there's no VESA mount.

Auto Select for input source did not work for me but that's a minor issue since I'm using only USB-C for video connection.

The time taken to switch between video input source and display mode is longer than what I prefer.

The time taken for the OSD menus to disappear due to inactivity is too short, at just 5s and 10s for the display mode switch and visual settngs.

MacOS doesn't really work well with touch features since that OS is not designed for touchscreens.

Conclusion

The Uperfect Delta Pro Touch is a well designed and practical product. Improved productivity is the obvious benefit of having an extra display or two. Visual quality of the display is good.

There are no potential deal breakers and the minor issues do not affect visual performance.

Whether this is worth your money will come down to the type of work you do. Personally for me, having just one extra display is very useful to me so I don't actually need two extra displays. But if you need or want two extra displays that are also portable, this product is one you can consider.
