Review: Huion PW550 Pen

The Huion PW550 pen was released in 2023 and has a slimmer model PW550S with 9.5mm diameter. Both pens support PenTech 3.0+ and are priced at USD 49.99 and USD 59.99 with the slimmer version being more expensive.

I contacted Huion and they said the PW550 is not compatible with the extra models supported by the PW550S. Some of the pen displays actually come with the Huion PW517 pen but they can also be used with the PW550S. Anyway, Huion PW517 is also USD 49.99.


The pen comes with extra four felt nibs and 5 plastic nibs. One felt nib is already installed in the pen. There's also a nib remover.


The PW550 has the same length as the PW550S at 15.5cm.


PW550 has a rubber grip and PW550S has a textured plastic grip. Both pens have two side buttons.

If you have either one of the pens, I don't think it's necessary to get the other.


The pen tip is firm and has no movement.


Design of this pen looks good and it's comfortable to hold. Build quality is solid. The pen is not powered by battery so no charging is required.


The pen uses PenTech 3.0+ and supports tilt and 8192 levels of pressure sensitivity.

I've tested the pen on the Huion Kamvas Studio 16 that I bought recently and it works great. The lines are predictable and consistent. Initial activation force is minimal so the pen is very sensitive.


Cursor tracking at the extreme edges of the display is accurate. And the cursor does not stray away from the pen tip when the pen is tilted.


Tilt and pressure can work at the same time.


Cursor will also follow the direction of the pen.


I only have one negative thing to say about the pen. The rubber/silicone grip will attract more dust compared to the plastic textured grip.

To concluded, the pen looks good, works well and is reasonably priced. The extra replacement nibs included is a nice bonus.
