We finally have a proper artbook for the Spider-Man films. And with Spider-Man coming back to Marvel Studios, it's not surprising to see all the concept art included getting all that Marvel-like treatment.
Just like many Marvel artbooks that came before, a slipcase is included with the hardcover. The 256-page artbook has the same size, dimensions and print quality (and smell) as the other Marvel artbooks.
By the way, the reason why I waited so long before I bought the book is because I wanted to wait for a good discount. I eventually bought it at US $39 which wasn't much of a discount. Marvel artbooks are definitely more expensive compared to other film artbooks. And when they are out of print, they are even more expensive. I was checking out how much the artbook for the first Iron Man was and there are sellers selling it for US $467 at the time of this writing. Crazy.
Back to the Spider-Man.
This is a fantastic artbook for all you fans out there. The book is packed with loads of concept art. You'll get lots of pages of Spider-Man and his many costumes, his gadgets such as the web-shooter and the mechanical spider that pops off the chest. The other guy that gets plenty of coverage is Vulture. Same thing, there are many design iterations of the jacket, helmet, wings, propeller and a storyboard sequence of how the wings actually fold when Vulture is landing. The only other character designs included are the thugs, a few screen stills of Peter Parker's friends at school. Iron Man makes a few cameos. Aunt May is nowhere to be found.
The rest of the book is filled with scene paintings of the environment and action sequences. Environments are for the workshop (with some close up on the gadgets those thugs were working on) and the party. The scene paintings for action sequences are fantastic, and just like they are in the film, exciting. Some artworks are across two pages and the large size does have impact.
You can't go wrong with getting this artbook if you're a fan. It's a great addition to the ever growing collection of Marvel film artbooks.
