Book Review: Daydream: The Art of Ukumo Uiti

Daydream: The Art of Ukumo Uiti - 01

This is the artbook of Japanese illustrator Ukumo Uiti. It's a 192-page paperback published by Pie Books in 2021.

The book collects art from the artist's 3 self-published doujinshi collection, namely Dreaming Girls, The Summer Gate and CEH[A/W]. There are also 20 new artworks in the book.

This book is packed with wonderful art featuring plenty of character designs against beautiful setting. There's a strong sense of design and composition that helps pull you into the scene. I really like background art which are really imaginative. It's one thing to draw good looking characters, but it's another thing to put them in an environment that feels just right. You can get a lot of ideas on how you can create interesting background art in this book.

The use of colour palette is also quite interesting. There's no particular recognisable style because there's a lot of experimentation, trial and error. And the colour palettes work.

This is a great book for those who like Japanese anime or manga style art, and for anyone looking for inspiration.

Yes, I love the anime illustrations too! Both the character illustrations blends beautifully with the illustrated backgrounds! And the book cover design...it's awesome! I may consider getting a copy. Thanks mate!
