Book Review: The Art of Sam Yang

The Art of Sam Yang - 01

Sam Yang is an artist based in Toronto, Canada, with large social media following. At the time of this review, his Instagram page has 2.2 million followers and his Youtube channel has 1.75 million subscribers.

The Art of Sam Yang is a 216-page large format hardcover published by 3DTotal Publishing. This is the artbook that features Sam Yang's personal artworks, coloured illustrations, sketches, stories of how he got into art, and there are some quick tips on his techniques.

The artworks are beautiful. If you know follow Sam Yang's art, you already know what to expect. There are plenty of character designs and most are female characters. I love the backgrounds and environment he creates for the characters too.

There are around 20 pages talking about his techniques. These aren't really step by step tutorials though. These tips are just meant to give you some insight as to how he works. If you want to learn more about digital painting, it's best to get the instructional artbooks from 3DTotal Publishing instead.

While you can probably find many of the artworks in this book online, having them collected in beautiful artbook is more convenient. This is the artbook for fans who like Sam Yang's art.

Sam Yang's videos are great to watch and his art is wonderful. He has great style and I was really looking forward to having this book.
When it arrived, I was uncomfortable with how many pictures were of quite young girls. Am going to sell it/give it away.

@me I’m just wondering what kind of people that are sensitive with girls. Do you prefer animals instead? Maybe better not to look at art book anymore, and don’t make make comments like this as it’s getting me uncomfortable too..

Look, each to their own and Mr Yang is very talented but I will make this comment. I don't typically regret art book purchases as much as this one.
I am sure there are loads of people who will love this work and I can imagine it rightly appeals to young girls etc.
It's essentially full of characters that appear to be young independent women in the big city etc but with these very doll-like faces with child proportions. Some are in bikinis, some in gym kit, short skirts etc.
It's all valid but, at the same time, it's a bit weird.
If you're familiar with the film Leon, there's a slight sense of that.
Deny it, disagree, fine. Mr Yang's visuals are gorgeous in terms of his lighting, colour etc but I will comment that I'm not 100% comfortable.
Another great artist is Bengal. Absolutely beautiful use of colour etc but some of the content is extremely uncomfortable. You can turn it around with some "you see what you see" but there we are.

This is a good example of free internet that provides no value at all with its comment. People these days are so sensitive.
