Review: Goojodoq CoverBuddy iPad Magnetic Case

The Goojodoq CoverBuddy is an iPad magnetic case for the iPad Pro 11 and 12.9 (2018 to 2022) and iPad Air (2020 - 2022). The price varies by size and is currently SGD 25 - 35 (USD 19 - 25) on Shopee SG at the time of review.

The selling point is this case provides scratch protection for the iPad, and the magnetic back can work with Apple Magic Keyboard, magnetic stands and slim folio cases. There's also a holder for the Apple Pencil 2.

The case holds on to the metal frame of the tablet and will not interfere with any screen protectors. The case will fit the thinner iPad Pro 12.9 from 2018 to 2020 and thicker M1/M2 iPad Pro 12.9 from 2021 and 2022.

Such magnetic cases are useful but actually uncommon, and the ones I know of are all more expensive than Goojodoq's:

The interior backing has soft felt surface.

The exterior has matte textured silicone. This is a slim hard case that provides protection against scratches but not for drops.

There are cutouts for the speakers and charging ports. The power and volume controls are covered and buttons work well when pressed.

The case protects 3 out of 4 sides. The one side with cutout is to prevent it from touching the keyboard case hinge.

There are however some design issues to note.

The case is slim but may be too thick to work with some slim magnetic folio cases. The one I have almost fits, as in the cover can be closed, but it's not a perfect fit.

The Goojodoq keyboard case for the iPad Pro works with the case but the magnetic attachment isn't as strong as I hoped. When pressing the volume buttons too hard, the case can slip off the back. The workaround is to hold the tablet with the case while pressing the volume controls.

One side of the case is cut to prevent it from interfering with the hinge, but it's not cut enough so the case still touches the hinge when opening and closing the keyboard case. That interaction may cause the case to slip off so the workaround is to hold the case and keyboard cover together while closing.

I do not have the original Apple Magic Keyboard so I cannot say whether there is the same issue.

The magnetic case works great with magnetic iPad stands. The magnetic strength is very strong.

Conclusion

It's a good iPad magnetic case but there are some design issues to note. If Goojodoq can improve the product, e.g. having a better side cutout to account for the hinge of keyboard cases, that will be great.

If you are from Singapore, you can buy this case from Goojodoq's online store on Shopee SG.
