Book Review: 松風 by 早稻 (SONG OF SYLVAN by ZAODAO)
Here's a book I borrowed from Basheer Graphic Books to feature here.
Title of the book is 松風 which translates to Song of Sylvan. It's an artbook by Chinese artist 早稻 (Zao Dao). It's a large format book that measures 24cm by 35cm.
When I first saw the cover, I was taken in by the style. It's so textural. The lines seem to be drawn with brush and the thick and thin together with the textured strokes really provides the visual interest. There's also the treatment for the environment which is straight out from the style of Chinese paintings. very moody and suggestive.
The artworks are wonderfully printed on the huge pages of the book. It's satisfying to see the artworks so large. The impact is certainly there and there are enough details to capture your attention as you move across the artwork to peruse the strokes and colouring as well as the overall piece.
There are some sequential comic panels included, but overall, I don't really get the story. Perhaps the book is meant more as a portfolio rather than an actual comic book. Most of the art inside are single or double page splash art anyway.
The theme is of some Chinese mythology with spirits and enchanting landscapes. The style is undeniably Asian with the medium and content.
It's a stunning book that's different from all other artbooks I've featured this year.
