Book Review: Growlanser Art Works

Growlanser is a Japanese RPG game that I know not of. It appears that there are six titles in the series for the Playstation and Portable. This 176-page artbook collects the art for all the titles.

The character designs from Satoshi Urushihara is as stylized as it can get with the sparkly eyes, shiny hair and elaborate costume designs. The characters are mainly alone on the page although there are a few splash art pages. You can see a level of finesse that goes into the character designs.

While there's design commentary on every page, it's lacking the character profiles. There are quite a lot of characters. There's an interview behind with Satoshi Urushihara, producer Shinjiro Takada, writer Yo Hazuki and designer Akira Odagaki.

This isn't the usual style of art that I go for but I suppose that they have their fans, after all, there are six game titles already out. The original Japanese edition of this book グローランサーアートワークス has very favorable reviews.

If you like the style of art, then you'll like this book.

Just FYI, only 4 of the 6

Just FYI, only 4 of the 6 games have been released in English to date. Ironically, the PSP port of the first Growlanser game this art book was created to promote in Japan hasn't been localized yet. Unfortunately the series very niche in the West, although the most recent release Wayfarer of Time seems to have quite well for a PSP game.

And a question, is this an advance review copy? Almost every website offering this book for sale gives a different release date, ranging from mid March to July!

Stacy from UDON here - as always, thanks for the detailed review! For people who are wondering, the book should be out by mid-March - we had a slight shipping delay but they are printed and en route to our distributor!

We know a lot of websites (Amazon, etc) have the wrong release dates for our books - it's something we're working on, but we don't have a fix yet, unfortunately! Our blog & Facebook are the most reliable sources of correct release info on our books.
