Anime Review: Gurren Lagann (2007)

Gurren Lagann

Gurren Lagann, known in Japan as Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (天元突破グレンラガン, Tengen Toppa Guren Ragan, literally "Heaven-Piercing Gurren Lagann") is a Japanese mecha anime. I only got to know of this anime after reviewing Groundwork of Gurren Lagann. The characters look interesting enough to entice me to watch. By that I mean Yoko, the bikini-clad sharp shooter with perfect female anime body, is too hot to resist.

Gurren Lagann

As flashy as the title sounds, the anime is more flashy than that. Heaven-Piercing Gurren Lagann? Heaven-Piercing? Seriously? Well, at the end of the series, you'll find out that it pierces more than heaven.

The show starts someplace in the future, where humans are forced to live underground in isolated civilizations. Because frequent earthquakes damages the infrastructure, the villages have to constantly dig deeper into the earth. Simon, on the main characters, is one of these diggers. One day while digging, he discovered "Lagann", a mecha with a face for a body. With Lagann, he and his brother Kamina, burst through the crust of the Earth and back onto the surface, to find out the reason why humans were forced underground.

The anime is incredibly entertaining and fun, even though the plot is really just passable. You'll see plenty of strange mechas fighting. Whenever the going gets tough, the tough gives a twist and bits back. No matter how dire the situation, Simon, Kamina and Yoko always manage to make a ridiculous and hilarious comeback from the brink of defeat. This anime defies logic, even if it wasn't logical to start with.

Gurren Lagann

The cast of characters and sidekicks are really hilarious. They talk big all the time. With the many female characters, there are plenty of sexual innuendos everywhere. In one episode where the ladies are trapped by the enemies in the bathhouse, Kamina is busy trying to save them and even more busy thinking about how to see them naked. The one other scene which had me bursting out in laughter is where an enemy acts out that famous Sharon Stone scene from Basic Instinct.

There are only 27 episodes in the series. Every episode tops the previous with more extravagant battles and the finale ends with a big bang — this is actually a spoiler but you won't get it now.

If you feel like having some senseless fun, Gurren Lagann will tickle your funny bones.

4.5 out of 5 stars.

I dare you to check out FLCL

I dare you to check out FLCL (yes, that's the full name, not an acronym).
To quickly describe it... well, it's like the 27 episodes of gurren lagann rolled into six -- except the end result is better, even though it's complete madness.

Check -Abenobashi mahou
