Review: Orico BookDrive Portable SSD with MagSafe (P10Plus)

The Orico BookDrive (P10Plus) is a portable SSD that's Magsafe compatible and comes with a USB-C port that supports power passthrough. Price of this SSD at the time of review on Amazon is USD 70 for the model with 512GB storage, and this is available up to 2TB.

One of the product photos show the SSD attached to the back of a laptop. It is possible, except the length of the included cable is just too short, about the width of my palm. Connecting it to the back of a tablet case would make more sense.

Orico has provided a magnetic ring to let you attach to the back of a laptop, tablet case or phone to make your devices MagSafe compatible.

The main selling feature with this SSD is there's an extra USB-C port that supports 100W power passthrough. This allows you to connect the SSD to your laptop, tablet or phone for file transfers, and can still charge the device at the same time. This is useful if you're using a device with limited number of ports.

If you do not need the extra USB-C port for charging, you can go with other smaller SSDs, such as the Orico K20 Mini that I've reviewed recently, which is also MagSafe compatible.

I don't think it make sense to use the P10Plus with a phone when the Orico K20 Mini exists.

I measured transfer speed of 900MB/s for read and write, and that is fast enough for 8K DCI 60 video editing according the the Black Magic Speed Test app I used.

The SSD is compatible with Thunderbolt and USB 4.

The Orico BookDrive P10Plus is well made and works as advertised. Pricing seems reasonable to me.
