Book Review: Brighton: Watercolour Memories by Isabel Carmona Andreu
Brighton: Watercolour Memories is a sketchbook that collects the watercolour sketches made by Isabel Carmona Andreu over a period of more than twenty years from 1995.
Isabel had stayed in Brighton from 1992 to 1995. Brighton is a seaside resort in the city of Brighton and Hove, East Sussex, England, 47 miles (76 km) south of London. She would later move away but would travel back occasionally to visit.
The watercolour sketches are of places that she has visited, such as the Brighton West Pier, the seafront and The Laines, the Royal Pavilion, Palace Pier and the beach.
This book and the watercolour sketches are more of a personal project rather than a detailed document and analysis of how Brighton has changed over the years. There are gaps of years without any sketches, and only selected places are covered although there are many more places to explore according to this travel guide.
The watercolour sketches are mostly just watercolour without line art. The style is really loose and some looked kinda abstract. Many look like quick impressions of the places. You can see how her work has evolved over the years. The accompanying text are enjoyable to read.
The book's priced at £25 and can be purchased from the publisher's website.
