Kanttuschen – Night Sketches in Kantstraße by Rolf Schroeter
The English title of this book is Night Sketches in Kantstrasse. The book's a 138-page paperback with open spine binding that allows for pages to open completely flat. Artist author Rolf Schröter / Rolf Schroeter is an architect and urban sketcher from Berlin and the publisher is Pushing Your Books.
This is a beautiful sketchbook with sketches from June 2020 to July 2021, drawn on location in Kantstrasse, a major thoroughfare located in West Berlin, Germany.
The book's written in, probably, German and there's a QR code you can scan for the English translation. It's not that convenient to read the English translation beside the book so you may want to read this blog post instead which is in English and also has many of the sketches featured on the book.
The sketches in this book were created with pen, ink and and what looks like ink washes instead of watercolour to me. The line are loose, expressive and confident. The texture of the ink washes has this texture that looks like they were applied with a ink-soaked cloth. The pen used looks like a brush pen so there's variety with line width and texture too.
Almost all the sketches in this book were presented to the edge of the pages, and that really makes the sketches look and feel immersive. It's like you're beside Rolf while he's sketching on the street.
This wonderful sketchbook was published in 2021 and can be purchased from the publisher website. Rolf's earlier book Eine Stunde Aufenthalt / One Hour Wait which I reviewed in 2018 is also a great sketchbook but is no longer available for sale.
