Book Review: Prague Sketchbook by Jaroslav Kalfar and Tom Mairs
Prague Sketchbook is a 96-page large format hardcover artbook with beautiful watercolour sketches of Prague.
The book is published by Les Éditions du Pacifique, the same French publisher that published many French edition watercolour sketchbooks, such as those painted by Fabrice Moireau, eg Berlin Sketchbook, Rooftops of Paris and more.
The watercolour sketches created by Canadian artist Tom Mairs captured the scenes and streets of Prague wonderfully. Interestingly, I wasn't able to find more information of Tom Mairs online.
The highlight of this book to me obviously are the beautiful watercolour sketches or paintings. There's a lot to see. Each page has at least one huge artwork or two smaller ones. The architecture of the city is stunning. There seems to be a good mix of touristy and non-touristy places. All the artworks are accompanied by some commentary.
The paper used is matte non-glossy and shows off the watercolours really well.
The author is Jaroslav Kalfar, born in Prague, Czech Republic, and had migrated to United States to pursue writing in English. He would travel often back to Prague for family matters. The story he wrote in this book is about his childhood in Prague, the places he visited as a kid, and the relationship he has with the city over decades.
This is a beautiful book for those who love watercolour, travelogue sketchbooks and Prague.
