Pocket Palette Travel Set by Etchr Lab & Stephanie Law (review)

Review sample provided by Etchr Lab

The Pocket Palette Travel Set is a portable watercolour palette box that can hold 7 colours with mixing wells. This was designed in collaboration with Stephanie Law, a Californian watercolour artist who has also designed the Etchr Mini Palette several years ago.

Price of this watercolour box is USD 59 which includes global shipping (above USD 42 purchase). There's also the option to add the 19-well or 37-well Mini Palette.

With the purchase, you'll get the box, a plate that holds 7 half pans, a plate that has two mixing wells, another plate that has six mixing wells. Four extra magnets are included. I guess the magnets are used to hold the half pans down? If so shouldn't there be 7 magnets instead?

The palette is vegan friendly, made with plastic with matte texture exterior. Dimensions are 9.4 x 9.7 x 3.3 cm. There's no mention of the weight but the box is not too heavy.

There are cutouts for opening the cover which can close and snap together with magnets. The palette is not airtight.

This clamshell design is quite comfortable to hold in hand as the edges are rounded off.

Half pans will be quite loose in the holders so you'll need to put some blu-tack or white-tack to hold down the pans. If you look close, there's a small cutout to help with removing the pans.

The magnets on top and below the removable plates help stack the plates together. When I saw the magnetic design, I thought it was possible to have a mixing well attach to the top corner of the palette but the plate would fall off easily if you push it with a brush.

The palette that I have belongs to an early batch and some of the magnets may come out. If yours has the same problem, you may want to put some glue into the holes and put the magnets back (make sure the magnets are facing the correct direction).

Mixes are able to pool together quite nicely on the plastic mixing wells. If I'm using this palette outdoors, I'll have the two-well plate on the ground with more water for cleaning my brush, or for mixing larger mixes.

Main limitation with this set is you can only fit 7 colours. The size of this palette is actually bigger compared to the typical 12-half pan metal or plastic palette boxes which usually have two or three mixing wells. And those palette boxes are usually much cheaper.

If you like this palette, you can get it from Etchr Lab online store.
