Book Review: Master Sketchbooks: Legendary artists of the entertainment industry reveal their secrets
Master Sketchbooks is a large format 272-page hardcover that features the sketches of 10 professional artists from the entertainment industry. This book was published by 3DTotal Publishing.
Binding looks good to me. Paper used is soft, low gloss and the book can open completely flat. All the artworks are well reproduced and big.
I was actually expecting more artists to be featured due to how thick the book is, but by including fewer artists you actually get more writeup and insight from each artist. And you also get to see more artworks from each artist.
These are the artists featured
- Wayne Barlowe - artist and author
- Sandro Cleuzo - character designer and animator
- David Colman - head of story
- Vincent Di Fate - illustrator
- Tony M Diterlizzi - author and illustrator
- James Gurney - author and artist
- John Howe - book illustrator and concept designer
- Dave Mckean - illustrator and artist
- Darrell Warner - character/costume illustrator
- Terryl Whitlatch - animal and creature artist
Most of the artists create fantasy art since they are from the entertainment industry. There are sketches and completed paintings, and some artists would share their creative process from start to completion. It's fun to see how the artists use sketches to explore ideas, and how the final artwork compares to the idea. All the pictures in the book are accompanied by captions.
This is an inspiring and insightbook book I can recommend easily to those who love sketchbooks and the creation process. And if you like this book, do check out the Sketching from the Imagination series from 3DTotal Publishing too.
