Book Review: Osaka Genso Art Works

Osaka Genso Art Works is the second artbook from Tokyo Genso, a Japanese artist know for depicting post apocalyptic versions of Japan. The first artbook Tokyo Genso Art Works was published in 2020 and I guess book sales did well enough for a sequel. This book was published by Geijutsu Shinbunsha in 2025.

This 144-page paperback artbook features an abandoned Osaka that's being reclaimed by nature. The idea is interesting and the artwork are beautiful. Many of the streets are now flooded, including the airport. There are now plants or even trees and roots growing on top of buildings.

The art style is quite similar to painted background art in Japanese anime. This book could be a concept artbook for a Japanese anime.

There are also a few work-in-progress sketches included, and some photos of the artist sketching on location. The book's in Japanese and there's no translation, but you don't need to know Japanese to enjoy the book.
