Book Review: The Art of The Boss Baby

The Art of The Boss Baby - 01

This is a pretty decent companion for Boss Baby.

Half of the 168-page hardcover features character designs. They've included lots of concept art for each character. I enjoy looking at the caricature or cartoony style but the designs themselves don't look too exciting for me. I don't think the designs are distinct enough for them to stand out against other animated films. There are some quirky characters (those are good) but most feel like background characters to me.

Highlight for me would be the scene drawings, such as the beautiful and colour illustrations by Stevie Lewis and Alex Puvilland. The locations and set designs look great, even if they are suburban houses. There's also a good look inside Baby Corp and Puppy Co.

Other artworks included are the storyboards and sketches, that's in addition to all the coloured art. There are the occasional commentary from the designers, and an introduction for each chapter. Right at the end is a look at the production process such as creating the story, colouring, modelling, previsualisation, rigging and lighting.

It's a decent companion but I'm not sure if it's a must-have, unless you're a fan of the film or like to collect all art books.
