Book Review: Singapore: Sketches of the Lion City

Singapore: Sketches of the Lion City - 01

This is an unexpected find at a local museum. This book isn't sold on Amazon so you'll have to use the ISBN 9789889732837 to hunt it down.

The sketchbook is by Lorette E. Roberts. I've previously reviewed her other sketchbook Sketches of Soho — she has many more sketchbooks.

I like this one too. It manages to capture the vibrancy and life of Singapore, the less busy more colourful side. There are watercolour sketches of the streets, the people, culture and even food. It's not all touristy as she also covers places that tourists don't normally go to like Pulau Ubin, a small island offshore that hikers go to. There are lots of interesting sights, and bits of information that I'm also reading for the first time.

The book was published in 2009. The majority of content is quite timeless, but you can also see from the sketches some of the landscape have changed with the addition of more buildings. There are even sketches of the F1 race that's held here.

It's a beautiful sketchbook about Singapore.

Again, it's not an easy book to find.
