Meet SAI

Wataboku (IG | X | FB | DA) is a digital artist based in Tokyo, Japan. The subject of this book is SAI, a schoolgirl character, that has gained popularity over the years. The earliest illustration in this book seems to be from 2017.

Thie artbook is a 176-page paperback published by PIE in 2023. VSI according to the artist means versus (VS) myself (I). The name “wataboku” comes from the Japanese words for “I”: “watashi” and “boku.”

The art looks good and definitely has the character style from Japan or Asian countries. Wataboku is quite versatile and you can see that he/she does not focus on specific techniques. The style can vary noticeably and that creates variety and interest even if it's the same schoolgirl we're seeing.

Unfortunately, this book does not have any tutorials on how the artworks were created. The only text (English and Japanese) is a one page epilogue from the artist.
