Review: Hahnemuhle 100% cotton watercolour sketchbook (250gsm coldpress)

This is the Hahnemuhle Watercolour Book, a watercolour sketchbook with 250gsm 100% cotton coldpress watercolour paper.

There is also a Hahnemuhle Watercolour Book with 200gsm cellulose cotton so make sure you don't buy the wrong sketchbook.

The sketchbook is available in the following sizes:

• A4, landscape and portrait
• 14cm x 14cm
• 19.5cm x 19.5cm

All the sketchbooks have 60 pages, acid-free and vegen-friendly.

Here in Singapore, the price of the A5-sized sketchbook is SGD 28, around USD 20-22.

The hardcover is made with waterproof canvas material which is easy to clean and does not collect dust.

The elastic band that holds the two covers together will probably become loose in the future, just like the other sketchbooks that I have that also have elastic bands.

Binding looks good. Pages are able to open completely flat.

Stitching looks tight.

The paper is able to handle pen, ink and watercolour really well.

The quality is definitely better than Moleskine (non-cotton) watercolour sketchbooks which is around the same price.

The 250gsm paper is thick enough to handle heavy washes, but there will be slight buckling. Just clip the pages and buckling won't be an issue.

Wet on wet techniques work well. Colours are able to blending softly and smoothly on the wet surface. Colour blending is easier with cotton watercolour paper. That's the main advantage this sketchbook has over the Hahnemuhle sketchbook without the cotton watercolour paper.

This is a quality portable watercolour sketchbook that seems durable, well made. It's worth the money to me and I can recommend this easily to anyone looking for a quality watercolour sketchbook.
