Book Review: Katsuya Terada Real Size

Doodle king is back with ginormous sketches

Katsuya Terada Real Size is a hardcover artbook that features several huge sketches, some are wall-sized, from the well known Japanese artist. The book's a large tall format hardcover originally published in 2019 by PIE. The book uses codex binding that with an exposed spine that allows the book to open completely flat.

If you know of Katsuya Terada, you already know that his character designs and ideas are amazing. This artbook is another great addition to all his sketchbooks from the past.

To show off the actual size of the sketches, the publisher has chosen to show them in real size, but only 16% of the sketch can be show per page spread, so there are several pages of the same sketch reproduced at actual size.

First thing I noticed about the sketches is they lines are thick and drawn with markers, which probably makes sense because if the lines are thin it would be difficult to see from afar.

The line art is amazing. And thanks to the real-size view, you can see all the intricacies and details. There's no paper that's this big so the artist has to draw on several huge panel boards. I wonder how much time it took to complete each piece because there's so much line art.

In addition to the huge sketches, there are also several smaller sketches.

This is an amazing book for those who love sketchbooks.
