Book Review: The Art of Kelogsloops: From Sketch to Finish
Hieu Nguyen, aka Kelogsloops, is a mixed media artist based in Melbourne, Australia, with a huge social media following, almost 1.4 million on Instagram and 1 million Youtube. I remember following his Youtube channel before it was huge and back then was already immensely impressed by his art, and he has grown further since then. He has exhibited his art in Los Angeles, Berlin, San Francisco, and Sydney.
The Art of Kelogsloops: From Sketch to Finish is a large 256-page hardcover artbook with gold glided page edges published by 3dtotal Publishing and is part of their 3dtotal Illustrator series that features mostly popular online artists. FYI, Amazon US has wrongly listed the book with only 152 pages.
Of all the 3dtotal illustrator books I've featured, this one has a lot more depth because Hieu shared a lot about his life and art career. He talked about his struggles as a student trying to figure out whether to purpose maths and science instead of art. He was also worried about disappointing his parents who had migrated from Vietnam to look for a better life, and his parents advised him to look for a "real job". He talked about his inspiration and motivation from other artists. There is a lot to read and it's very inspiring because I believe many aspiring artists can probably relate to some of his struggles. And that's what makes this book more real and relatable.
This book is packed with lots of beautiful artworks and designs. There are drawings made when he was a kid, ones he posted on Deviantart, the illustrations he submitted to art contests, his personal pieces and the exhibited gallery pieces. Many of the artworks he has shared online are now collected in one volume and printed huge.
This is a wonderful artbook for aspiring artists and fans of Hieu.
