Book Review: Overwatch: Declassified - An Official History

Overwatch: Declassified - An Official History - 19

As the book title suggests, this is the history book of Overwatch.

This large format 208-page hardcover is published by Blizzard Entertainment, the publisher and developer of the game. Thick low gloss paper is used and the binding is good. The author is Seanan McGuire and has done a great job with this book to make it an engaging and interesting read.

The cover art is gorgeous of course. Overwatch is one of the video games with more striking and memorable character designs. The main characters on the cover are printed with this shiny metallic overlay while the background is matte. The dust jacket is just one third the height of the book.

Here's the list of contents:

  • Introduction: Declassiyfing Our Own World
  • Chapter One: A Tarnished Utopia
  • Chapter Two: The Dark Before the Dawn
  • Chapter Three: Someone to Watch Over Us
  • Chapter Four: The Age of Heroes
  • Chapter Five: Choose Your Future Well
  • Chapter SIx: A Fragile Peace
  • Chapter Seven: A Growing Mission
  • Chapter Eight: Pride Goeth
  • Chapter Nine: ...Before the Fall
  • Chapter Ten: A New Crisis
  • Conclusion: The World Needs Heroes

The book covers AI and robotics evolution, formation of Omnica Corporation, The Omnic Crisis, Golden Age of Overwatch and the decline of Overwatch. Overwatch agents covered are Vivian Chase (Sojourn), Jack Morrison, Gabriel Reyes, Ana Amari, Reinhardt Wilhelm, Torbjorn Lindholm, Angela Ziegler (Mercy), Cole Cassidy, Genji Shimada, Winston and Lena Oxton (Tracer).

The book is beautifully laid out with plenty to read and big beautiful artworks to admire. The amount of content on the Overwatch wikipedia page is probably just one chapter's worth of content in this book with ten chapters. This is the reference book for those who want to learn more about the backstory and politics of the Overwatch world.

This book is pretty much a must-buy for Overwatch fans. And obviously if you're a fan of the game, you must also get The Art of Overwatch, The Cinematic Art of Overwatch Vol 1 and The Art of Overwatch, Volume 2
