James grew up in Springfield, Vermont, earned an MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and now lives in Burlington, Vermont. He has published many books of his comic strips, two volumes of his daily illustrated journals, titled American Elf and, most recently, a children's book: Squirrelly Gray.
