Gouache Techniques for Sketchbook Illustration by Emma Block

Emma Block is an illustrator, teacher and author based in London, UK. She has worked with publishers for illustrations and branding, and has published several instructional artbooks such as The Joy of Watercolor, Get Started with Gouache and more.

This course Gouache Techniques for Sketchbook Illustration is a beginner's guide to painting with gouache. The difference between this book vs the gouache book mentioned earlier is this online art course has one main project whereas the book has many smaller projects. In terms of value for money, I would actually recommend you get the book since you'll be able to get more practice with more subjects to paint. Having said that, it you prefer to learn with step by step guidance with audio and video, you have the option too.

The course starts with Emma talking about her work, inspiration and the tools you'll need - gouache, brush and thick paper.

The reference photo is provided and the lessons are easy to follow along. The action is shown clearly and there are many insightful tips for beginners.

There are also lessons on scanning your art, making edits and adding embellishment.

This course is great for beginners with no knowledge of making art. Once you're more comfortable with gouache, I highly recommend you check out gouache courses by Maru Goda and Sarah van Dongen to see how you can push the medium with more expression and fun.

Oh, check out my own drawing courses too!
