Tokyo At Night is the second artbook from Mateusz Urbanowicz, a freelance illustrator from Poland currently based in Tokyo Japan.
This is a 160-page paperback that features absolutely beautiful watercolour illustrations of Tokyo at night. Watercolour isn't used commonly to depict night scenes so to see so many artworks in this book is just delightful. Subjects featured are tall buildings, unusual places, trains, bridges, rainy scenes and back alleys. Even addresses for the locations are listed.
Mateusz Urbanowicz's style is detailed and precise. His use of colours is masterful which is not surprising if you know that he has had experience painting background art for animated films. The colours are so beautiful that each illustration holds my attention for a long time. It's difficult to imagine how much has gone into creating each piece of art.
The text is in Japanese and English. The captions talk about certain aspects and techniques from the artworks. There's also a lengthy interview with director Makoto Shinkai, detailed writeup on this book project and a step-by-step look at how one illustration was created.
This is a gorgeous artbook I highly recommend. Be sure to get it together with his earlier book on Tokyo storefronts too.
