Book Review: The Complete Guide to Perspective

The Complete Guide to Perspective

This is a rather advanced book on perspective which might be too intimidating for the beginner.

There's a lot of theory going on, there are lots of examples too. Other books talk about the vanishing point as the point where lines converge at the horizon, this book goes further explaining what really happens at the vanishing point (the lines actually do not converge!).

Most parts of the book are accessible and comprehensible. Concepts are well explained. The advanced sections are clearly marked out, involve elaborate setups and definitely not for beginners.

The examples are good. Some can get complicated like rendering of tall buildings from a low perspective, skyscrapers and cities from a high perspective, or a not-as-simple-as-it-looks staircase with multiple vanishing points.

In addition to structural stuff like buildings, there's also a chapter on irregular forms like a horse, humans, boats, wheeled vehicles.

If you already know some basics and want to take your skills to the next level, this is the book to get.

If you're just starting to learn perspective, I would recommend Perspective Made Easy by Ernest R. Norling.

that sounds like it contains

that sounds like it contains about what my perspective book covers: 1-3-point perspective with all the gimmicks you could possibly conceive.

id really like a book to have a solid chapter on curvilinear perspective... that would be a real winner.
