Book Review: After the Summer of 1890

After the Summer of 1890 - 01

After the Summer of 1890 is the catalogue artbook published in conjunction with the exhibition of the same name. It's an exhibition that wants to draw attention and increase awareness of the importance of mental and psychological wellness.

Several artists were invited to contribute artwork and they were tasked to interpret van Gogh's works with their imagination. The artists included are Aryln de Jesus, Beth Cheong, Don Low, Jenny Sim, Paul Koh and William Sim.

It's interesting to see the different takes on van Gogh's pieces such as Starry Night (1889), Cypresses (1889), La Sieste (Meridienne) (1890) and others. Don Low painted a self portrait using the same hurried brushstrokes. Paul Koh has his cat appear in traditional paint, Beth Cheong with her owls.

Half the book are blank pages for you to draw on. The other half are the artworks, quotes and information on van Gogh.

The book is for sale in Singapore. Retails at SGD $40.
