Melanie was born in Kellogg, Idaho, and spent her childhood moving around the United States and Canada. She has a BA in English from the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, earned a second degree in journalism from Mount Royal College in Calgary, Alberta, and worked briefly as a journalist before returning to Grant MacEwan College to get a degree in visual communication.
