Book Review: Sonny Liew's Secret Robot Spy Factory

Sonny Liew's Secret Robot Spy Factory

Secret Robot Spy Factory

Here's the sketchbook of Sonny Liew, Secret Robot Spy Factory. It's a 60-page paperback.

Inside's a selection of work from when he started out in the early nineties to 2008. There are some hidden gems in this book which fans will find interesting. For Singaporeans, if you have good memory, you might be able to recall whimsical comic strips like Frankie & Poo or Chang & Eng for they are published locally.

His work has also appeared in other publications as well, such as Malinky Robot in the Flight comic anthology series. I've also read Re-Gifters which was quite good. Besides the sketchy stuff, there are also a few oil paintings included. Sonny presents his own short description on his work.

His latest work is Wonderland, a sequel sort-of to Alice in Wonderland after Alice has left. It got him an Eisner nomination for the penciling and inking category.

Let me end with a quote from Jon Foster:

The philosopher artist, Sonny has been a friend of mine for some time. Before that he was a student and what a student, he didn't know it but he was teaching me! I still look with wonder at his skill and imagination and hope he will always tell me stories as well as remind me that art is exploration and joy."
