Book Review: Cambodia & Angkor: A Travel Sketchbook

Cambodia & Angkor: A Travel Sketchbook is a wonderful travelogue recording the few months Elsie Herberstein, Justin Creedy Smith and Damien Chavanat spent traveling in Cambodia in 2001. They were guided by Benito, founder of the leading Cambodian humanitarian organisation of children.

The text and sketches are from Elise and Damien, photos are from Justin.

They traveled across the country, visiting Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Angkor, Tonle Sap, Battambang, Tuol Sleng, The Mekong and many other places like the villages and towns. Many of the places are off the beaten tracks where tourists don't go to.

The first person commentary really gives a detailed and insightful account of the country. The watercolour sketches and photographs are great. All these present a different side of Cambodia than what you usually see and read from tourist guidebooks. It has a bit of history, and there's certainly a lot of culture and you'll learn plenty about how people live there.

In short, this is an adventure in book form, a terrific travelogue sketchbook.

Highly recommended.
