Book Review: The Art of Trollhunters

Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia is 3D-animated television series created for Netflix by Guillermo del Toro and produced by DreamWorks Animation and Double Dare You Productions.

The artbook's a 216-page hardcover that's packed with beautiful concept art. Main highlight of the book is definitely the designs for the trolls and environment. The human characters are nice but we're sort of at the unfortunately stage where human character designs are starting to look Pixar-Despicable-Me-ish.

The troll designs look great. There are multiple concepts for each troll. There are artworks for poses, expressions. I love the creature designs and colour studies.

The locations are gorgeous. There's a good amount of interior and exterior scenes. The environments have a lot of form, dimensionality. You can really feel the physical space and the life. There's a lot of details to admire. The world is surprisingly colourful. There are even hues to the rocks and caverns, and of course there are colourful, subdued, lighting everywhere.

Other designs included are for props, weapons and artifacts. You also get some colour scripts and storyboards.

This is a fantastic companion artbook that's definitely worth the money.
