Book Review: Eternal Journey by James Jean

James Jean Eternal Journey - 01

Eternal Journey is the catalog artbook featuring the artworks from James Jean's 2019 solo exhibition at the Lotte Museum of Art in South Korea.

If you're a fan or collector of James Jean's art, this is probably a must buy. Unfortunately, this catalog book has a limited print run of just 1,500 copies, and at time of this review, it's already sold out on James Jean's online store. Official retail price is US $50. The copy I have is from Basheer Graphic Books, Singapore. I imagine there will be scalpers selling this at ridiculous prices soon.

There also happens to be a red-slipcase edition which is even more limited, just 250 copies, each at US $250. That's sold out as well, just as you expected. The blue-coloured edition is a cloth-bound hardcover with 176 pages.

You can see some of the exhibition paintings on his website, but there's no mention which pieces are shown at the exhibition though. Hint: the really wide ones are the ones.

James Jean's art is breathtaking. He's the definition of a modern master, as oppose to old masters. His fantasy imagery are so unique and recognisable. Hidden in his works are themes that invite you to think. The artworks are exquisite and deep at the same time. Thankfully, this book does have captions for the various paintings, including a few essays talking about his art.

You would need to be lucky to have this book.
