Book Review: Jerusalem: Chronicles from the Holy City

Jerusalem: Chronicles from the Holy City - 01

Guy Delisle is a comic artist known for his travelogue graphic journals, such as Shenzhen (2000), Pyongyang (2003), Burma Chronicles (2007) and Jerusalem (2009).

In 2009, he stayed a year in Beit Hanina, Jerusalem, as he had to accompany his wife who works for the Médecins Sans Frontières (aka Doctors without Boarders). Collected in this 320-thick hardcover graphic novel are his stories and experience when he lived there.

I love how Guy Delisle captured the subtitles of life and culture there. Jerusalem is, to me, a mysterious country with lots of tension because its relationship with Palestine. Many pieces of land are being contested by these two countries and have been for decades. Then there's tension that comes from all the different religions. You'll be able to "experience" what it's like to live there through Guy Delisle's eyes. I don't have any good or bad things to say about how the countries run things except to say that it is what it is.

This is a wonderful travelogue that does a fantastic job showing what it's like to be living in Jerusalem.
