Book Review: Sketch Every Day: 100+ simple drawing exercises from Simone Grünewald

Sketch Every Day: 100+ simple drawing exercises from Simone Grünewald - 01

Sketch Every Day is a 208-page paperback artbook filled with drawing tips from Simone Grünewald

Simone has animated, designed characters, backgrounds and storyboarded for video games. She has almost a decade of experience and has since moved on to become a freelancer, and is doing incredibly well. In addition to the drawing tips, she also shares a lot on her life as an artist, her career and how to balance life and work as a mom.

This book is on how you can create a habit to sketch every day. It has ideas on what you can draw and also covers the technical skills you need to draw. The subject matter is mostly characters so there are lots of tips on drawing anatomy, faces, clothes and posture. The text is clear, concise, easy to follow, and written in an engaging and accessible manner. I really enjoyed reading about her career, on how she started out, progress, develop her style and going into freelance.

This is a great book for those who want to start drawing, or draw more consistently.

This book is actually one of the many artist-specific instructional books 3Dtotal Publishing has put out recently.

This book looks too complex

This book looks too complex for a beginner. I am kinda surprised at the inclusion of the word "simple." I guess some artists forget what being a beginner really means. Hands and feet? Good grief. Some artists never master them. And so on.

This is one of the best books

This is one of the best books I have and is absolutely great for beginners and even more advanced artists. Focusing mostly, but not exclusively, on character design and finding your own style. Everything is well explained and some of the more common mistakes beginners (well me anyway) make and/or have difficulties with are clarified. I'd recommend this to just about anyone looking to improve their character drawing skills.
