Book Review: Kevin Smith: His Films and Fans

Behind the scenes with Kevin Smith

Kevin Smith: His Films and Fans is a 200-page hardcover biography authored by David Gati and published by Schiffer Publishing.

This is quite an insightful and entertaining book that goes behind the scenes and covers almost all the films that Kevin Smith has made, namely:

  • Clerks (1994)
  • Mallrats (1995)
  • Chasing Amy (1997)
  • Dogma (1999)
  • Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001)
  • Jersey Girl (2004)
  • Clerks II (2006)
  • Zack and Miri Make a Porno (2008)
  • Cop Out (2010)
  • Red State (2011)
  • Tusk (2014)
  • Yoga Hosers (2016)
  • Jay and Silent Bob Reboot (2019)
  • Clerks III (2022)

This book has stories on what he was doing before making films, how he got started, writing, budgeting, filming, reception and interactions with the actors. There are so many interesting tales included, and loads of interviews. There was a story on how Ben Affleck improvised some dialogue in Chasing Amy and Kevin Smith wasn't happy about that and asked him to go write his own movie (Good Will Hunting (1997)) which later won an Academy Award.

This is a great book for fans of Kevin Smith and film making. There's a lot to read and learn from his 30 years of film making experience. I believe this book will be inspiring for budding film makers.

This book will be released in February 2023.
