Book Review: The Art and Making of Alien: Covenant

This is more of a making-of rather than an art-of book. So for those expecting designs and hand-drawn art, you're likely to be disappointed.

As a making-of book, it's quite a good one though.

The bulk of the book is filled with film stills, photos from the set and behind the scenes. The artworks included are the fully realised renders of the ship, interiors, cryo pods, control station, Cargo Lifter, the Lander and of course the aliens. The alien designs are still pretty cool. The hand-drawn art looks very much like those you can find in creepy anatomy study books. There are also cross sections of the aliens, and the physical models.

Overall, it's a decent film companion, one that's worth the money in my opinion. This book should appeal very much to fans of the film or Alien franchise. There's lots of commentary about the film, exploration into each character's motivation, filming process and how the sets were made. It's an insightful read that makes one understand more about the ideas behind the film, and how it relates to the franchise.
