Publisher CFSL Ink has sent me some preview pages for the upcoming art book of Pascal Blanche titled Derelict Planet. Pascal Blanche is an art director at video game companies.
The book is coming out end of April 2012, and is available for pre-order on Amazon.fr.
This book collects his personal works. They are all character-based illustrations of sci-fi and fantasy.
The art is beautiful. They look like they are traditionally painted, very textural but they have a very 3D look to them. They are actually 3D models rendered in 3ds Max and Zbrush. You can see some of his work on his deviantart page. The end result often leaves me guessing whether if it's 3D or not, even though I already know the answer.
It's interesting to see his use of colours, examples like analogous, complementary among other colour schemes. He likes to use limited colours like three or four colours with their various tints. It gives the illustrations a distinct feel to them.
The last section has a tutorial of how he creates those detailed illustrations using a combination of ZBrush and Photoshop.
It's a great book for those into character designs and 3D art.
