Book Review: Well-Read Women: Portraits of Fiction's Most Beloved Heroines

Well-Read Women is a beautiful book of watercolour portraits by artist Samantha Hahn.

The ladies drawn are characters from books, among them Daisy Buchanan from The Great Gatsby, Alice from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Juliet from Romeo and Juliet, Holly Golightly from Breakfast at Tiffany's, and many more. A total of 50.

The hardcover book has 112 pages, and every two pages feature a drawing together with a quote from the character.

Using watercolour for portrait drawings is not easy. Samanthan Hahn has pulled it off very well, rendering them watercolours, and somehow even manage to evoke a sense of elegance.

The quotes in handwritten script are also wonderful. Some are written in ink, many in watercolour. The coloured letters have varying colours themselves, just like how watercolour behave.

It's a wonderful book.
