Book Review: The Art and Making of Hotel Transylvania

The Art and Making of Hotel Transylvania - 01

This is a wonderful artbook filled with beautiful concept art. All 160 pages.

When I first saw the movie trailer, I was really tickled by the monsters. Hotel Transylvania has certainly given not just a new life but also new looks to classic horror monsters.

Majority of art are on the characters. The character designs are funny. Monsters that used to be scary now look comical. The fat Mummy, Werewolf in a shirt with short tie and a hydra with six dog heads are among the many monsters living in that resort hotel.

It's amusing looking at the monsters and reading their stories. Each character comes with many cool variations. Kudos to Carter Goodrich, Annette Marnat, Carlos Grangel and other character designers for the wacky monsters.

Much of the production design are of the castle interiors and props. Different areas and rooms are showed, like the library, kitchen, spa and steam rooms, etc. It It's enjoyable looking at the details that went into the furnishings to make this a cozy hotel.

This is one of my favourite artbooks for 2012.

Highly recommended to art and animation fans.

There is also a limited

There is also a limited slipcased edition of only 1,000 units, signed & numbered by Genndy Tartakovsky. The price is an amazingly low £35.00. This edition is only available via the Titan Exclusives website and Forbidden Planet's (UK) webfront.

Since this book is one of the standout artbooks of this year, I would seriously consider purchasing the limited over the trade since the price is eminently reasonable.

thanks for that information,

thanks for that information, fred.

i collect many "making of" books, and this one has become a favourite. the character design are brilliant. good to know there is a limited edition publication at a reasonable cost. will definitely look into it. thanks for the heads up.

and, Parka, thanks for reviews. i have purchased many-a -book because of your profiling.

I already had the regular

I already had the regular edition of the book "Art of Hotel Transylvania " for just $ 20 and I bought this special edition thinking it was a luxury edition, with better quality paper and slipcase. In the end I received a book almost same as above without slipcase and same paper, only with a different cover and the signed director drawing .

I feel cheated!

When I bought the book in the Titan books Web specifications said with slipcase, not now, after purchase.

Yeah, I could've sworn their

Yeah, I could've sworn their initial solicitations showed a slipcase. I don't know why they pulled it.

It's very odd for Titan to not include slipcases for their premium editions. However, bear in mind that this is a very INexpensive limited at only $50/£35.00. The regular edition retails for $34.95/£24.99, making the limited only $15.05/£10.01 more. As such, this was never meant to be a "luxury" edition.

IMO, the tipped-in signature sheet alone warrants the higher price over the trade. You also get the variant dustjacket. Plus, I think the binding might be upgraded over the trade. I've seen publishers do far less while demanding far more money. I was shocked that Titan even bothered with a limited of this title.

Still, if you're unhappy with it, then definitely return it and write to Titan documenting your disappointments. Just remember that the MSRP was only a little more versus the trade.
