Book Review: Blacksad

Blacksad

I actually saw a few panels of the book at some online forum before the book was published, possibly from other editions. Back then, I was blown away by the idea of using animals for all the characters, and putting them in exactly the same situation as any human. Well, that's Blacksad.

Here's a graphic novel with a very distinct, beautiful visual style and good detective stories.

Product description from Amazon:

Private investigator John Blacksad is up to his feline ears in mystery, digging into the backstories behind murders, child abductions, and nuclear secrets. Guarnido's sumptuously painted pages and rich cinematic style bring the world of 1950s America to vibrant life, with Canales weaving in fascinating tales of conspiracy, racial tension, and the "red scare" Communist witch hunts of the time. Guarnido reinvents anthropomorphism in these pages, and industry colleagues no less than Will Eisner, Jim Steranko, and Tim Sale are fans! Whether John Blacksad is falling for dangerous women or getting beaten to within an inch of his life, his stories are, simply put, unforgettable.

Good choice, my friend ! This book is a long time best seller in France and we are now anxiously longing for the fourth volume scheduled in september. I strongly recommend the second volume (best story to me)

Keep it up !

Blacksad is one of the greatest comics I read. Everyone, who loves this film noir style and this kind of classic disney animation movie characters as seen in robin hood will love it.
And... if its a compendium - no one should miss it!

The art in this book is magnificent.
I have only the 1st issue and I have explored every single picture in it.
I'm most impressed of the level of detail.
Try to find mistakes between the first two panels on page 3.
There is a room shown from two different angles and no mater how hard you try you will see that every object in this room is on it's exactly right position.
Everything: notes, pencils, cups, books, sculptures everything is on it appropriate place as if it has been photographed.
Wonderful

p.s.
On another subject...
I received the book couple of days before. I didn't know that it's gonna be signed by the author :)
Thanks Parka
