Review: UPERFECT X Pro LapDock (15.6-inch 4K touchscreen with keyboard)

Review unit provided by UPERFECT

UPERFECT is a company that sells a huge variety of portable monitors from 13.3 to 17.3 inches with 1080P to 4K resolution. They are quite popular on Amazon with thousands of positive reviews.

The UPERFECT X Pro LapDock (2021) is a 15.6-inch 4K touchscreen display with internal battery and comes a removable keyboard cover.

It's available in either 1080P (US $499) or 4K (US $599). It's quite pricey. If you don't need the touchscreen or keyboard, you can consider their other portable displays which are noticeably cheaper.

Items included are

  • Display
  • Keyboard cover
  • 2x USB-C to USB-C cable
  • 1x mini HDMI to full-size HDMI cable
  • 1x USB-A to USB-C cable
  • Wall charger with country specific plug (only if you order from their website)

Each cable is 1m long.

Not sure what material is used to make the body but build quality is solid, excellent and does not flex. There's no UPERFECT logo on the front and back. The back also has a nice matte surface texture.

The two speakers are located on the back and sound quite muffled, and aren't powerful.

Ports on the left are 3.5mm audio jack, USB-C OTG (this does not accept video input) and a button/toggle for OSD.

Ports on the right are USB-C for video, data, audio, USB-C for charging only and a mini HDMI port.

Portable displays with mini HDMI ports usually require another cable for power but it's not needed with the UPERFECT X Pro because there's an internal battery.

The hinge is stiff and can be adjusted easily to any angle.

This is a beautiful display that uses WLED IPS panel. Colours look great out of the box. VIewing angles are good with minimal colour shift.

The display is glossy and very reflective. It's best to use this indoors or adjust the hinge so that you don't get reflections. Otherwise the reflections can make it difficult to see what's on the display.

Bezels are thin at the top and side, much thicker at the bottom.

The 4K (3840 x 2160) resolution makes all visuals look sharp and detailed. There's no noticeable pixelation.

If you get the model with 1080P, pixelation will be noticeable.

Using a Spyder5Pro colour calibrator, I measured colour support for 93% sRGB, 72% NTSC, 73% AdeobeRGB and 78% P3. While 93% is not quite the 100% sRGB marketed by the company, anything above 90% sRGB is considered quite good colour coverage. Ultimately, the colours look good. I measured a maximum brightness of 260 nits.

The keyboard cover is attached to the bottom of the display using strong magnets. Palm rest is nice and has this Alcantara-like texture.

The keys feel plasticky but otherwise they have good travel and feedback.

The keys are not as good as wireless Logitech keyboards but they are good coming from a keyboard cover.

Overall typing experience is alright. The keyboard cover is one of the main selling points because while there are many portable external displays in the market, not many come with a keyboard cover.

The keys have no backlight. Brightness control on the function buttons control the brightness of the connected phone or tablet. The right Shift key is too small because the arrow buttons are full-size and take up space.

The trackpad is small but usable. The click is a bit stiff for my liking though. If I have to use the keyboard for long periods of time, I will probably use a wireless mouse. Or you can just use the touchscreen if you don't need the precision of a mouse.

The display is touchscreen and finger gesture support works well with Android and Windows. With MacOS, touch features is limited to mouse clicks, double click, click and drag.

You can write on the display with a stylus or finger but the writing performance is not good. The touchscreen is mostly for navigation purposes such as scroll, zoom and rotate.

The touchscreen can also be used to adjust settings in the OSD.

When I connected my Samsung Galaxy Note 20 to the display, it initially mirrored my phone's screen and did not switch to desktop mode automatically. I had to use the OSD and tap on the battery icon to set the display to "deliver power" and after that I was able to use the phone's desktop mode. This will also charge the phone through power delivery. I did not have to do this with my Samsung tablet with SamsungDex.

Before you buy this display, you have to make sure your Android phone or tablet has desktop mode. Note that not all Android phones and tablets will be able to drive the external display at 4K resolution. The Samsung Note 20 could support up to 1080P while the Samsung Tab S7+ can support up to 1440P. It may not make sense to buy the 4K model unless you can use the display at 4K.

The UPERFECT X Pro LapDock is designed to be used with portable devices like phones and tablets that can output video signal. If you already have a laptop, it doesn't really make sense to get this unless you want an external display but in that case you should just get one without the keyboard.

So this display is mostly targeted at people who are highly mobile and need a large display to connect to their phone or tablet, but for some reason don't want to use a laptop or don't have a laptop. The good thing about a display like this is you can use it with multiple devices. While you're outdoors, you can connect to your phone. When you're at home, you can connect to your computer as the main or secondary display.

The built-in battery has a capacity of 10000 mAh. I managed to get 4hr+ battery life with display at 50% brightness. Battery life depends on the brightness of the display. The display can be powered by a USB-C power bank but you have to connect it to the USB-C port that accepts power.

The battery life indicator is located at the top right and is always visible, even when watching a movie.

Colours look good on this display so this can be used for graphic design work. Visual content creators probably would appreciate the 4K resolution for the extra details.

If you don't need 4K, you can just go with the 1080P model which is cheaper but the visuals will look more pixelated.

Ultimately, the UPERFECT X Pro works just like any external monitor when connected. The selling point here is actually the keyboard cover which is more convenient compared to getting and bringing a portable monitor with a wireless keyboard.

For the display, it's 5 out of 5 stars easily. For the keyboard, it's probably 3.5 or 4 out of 5 stars. So overall, the UPERFECT X Pro gets a 4-4.5 out of 5 stars from me.

Very candid and accurate

Very candid and accurate review. One question, as I observed there is a "Windows" key on the keyboard cover, if this screen is used with a small 12-inch FHD screen laptop and with this screen being 4K, if I set the laptop to use this screen as a primary display, can I also use this keyboard cover as my primary keyboard too rather than only typw on the keyboard of the laptop. That is to say, I use this 15.6" 4K screen with keyboard cover become the complete dock for the laptop.
