Book Review: Your Name. The Official Visual Guide

If you have not watched the movie Your Name, do yourself a favour and watch it. This movie is beautiful, has an incredible story and is moving. This movie is peak animation. I was so mesmerised by the art and story when I first watched it.

Your Name. The Official Visual Guide is the companion for theJapanese animated movie directed by Makoto Shinkai. The book's a 128-page large-format paperback published by Yen Press. This book is actually the English translated version (published 2021) of the original Japanese edition which was published in 2016, the same year the movie came out.

As the title suggests, this book is the visual guide for the movie. I'm not sure what to think about the 40 over pages of film stills that recaps the story. The rest of the book has interviews with the voice actors, director, musicians and other staff who worked on the film. There are also some storyboards, sketches for character design, props, interiors, some background art and photos of studio and people working.

The downside of the book is it only has 128 pages. The movie is absolutely gorgeous so this book doesn't feel very substantial for a movie that's made with art. If you're into background art, there's actually a dedicated artbook just for background art. Both books should compliment each other well. And since this book is so called official, it's pretty much a must buy for fans of the movie.
