Book Review: Frazetta Sketchbook, Vol. II

Frazetta Sketchbook, Vol. II - 01

Here's the sequel to the first Frazetta sketchbook that was released in 2013.

The chapters are actually quite similar to the first book. You'll still see Tarzan, Conan, Death Dealer, life drawings and his personal works. However, most of the works in this book were previously unpublished. So this book expands on the materials that are already out there.

Frazetta's work is fantastic of course, regardless of medium. Most artworks in this book are rough drafts, preliminaries for commercial work, pencil and inks.

There are ten chapters in the book, each with an essay. For example, there's a chapter on movies and how they were influenced by Frazetta. Another talks about the work he created for Lord of the Rings, the book. There's also a chapter on a comic story called Came the Dawn with striking ink art but was never used. The last chapter has a bit more of his personal works.

The collection is compiled by J. David Spurlock and Patrick K. Hill who both wrote some of those illuminating essays, which contains excerpts to previous publications that mention Frazetta.

This book is available in hardcover and paperback. Both 176-pages each. There's also a slipcased deluxe edition with 16 extra pages featuring a bonus gallery.

If you have been collected Frazetta artbooks, this is another welcome addition.
