Review: Orico USB 4 enclosure for NVMe SSD (M2V01-C4)

The Orico USB 4 NVMe SSD enclosure (M2V01-C4) is a well designed enclosure that is a mixed bag, but overall a pretty good product.

I purchased the enclosure for SGD 230 and the Samsung 970 Evo Plus for SGD 331. Total is SGD 561.

These are the items included:

  • Enclosure
  • 2x screws and screw driver
  • USB-C to USB-C cable
  • USB-A to USB-C cable
  • 1x thermal pad
  • Manual

This enclosure is compatible with Thunderbolt 3/4, USB3.2, 3.1 and 3.0.

The SSDs compatible are M and M&B-key SSDs.

Installation is straightforward. Unscrew the back plate, put the SSD in, screw down the SSD, stick the thermal pad on the back plate, put the plate back.

The build quality is excellent and the fins are great at dissipating heat and that prevents heat throttling very effectively.

On the M1 Macbook Air, I measured 2835MB/s read and 983MB/s write transfer speeds. Read speed is fantastic but write speed is not close to the advertised speed of the Samsung 970 Evo Plus with 3500MB/s read and 3300MB/s write.

For video editing, it can support up to 8K DCI 60 format.

On Windows, I measured 3103MB/s read and 806 MB/s write with the Samsung 970 Evo Plus.

On Windows and with the WN SN750 SSD, I measured 3090 MB/s read and 1308MB/s write which was better but still nowhere near the advertised SSD speeds.

Anyway, those are my findings. Overall, I'm quite satisfied with the performance since both the read and write speeds are not the bottleneck for the work -- my time is my bottleneck.

If you don't need such high transfer speeds, you can go with more affordable 20Gbps or 10Gbps NVMe enclosures instead. I reviewed the Orico 10Gbps M.2 NVMe Enclosure (FV35C3-G2) recently and that's pretty good for SGD 40 - 50.
