Graphic Design School is in the sixth edition now so I guess it goes to show that it's still as relevant and useful today since it was first published. This latest edition is updated to include advice on how you can adapt designs to different platforms, such as for web or for mobile screens.
This 208-page paperback is a foundation course for beginner graphic designers. The text is written in a straightforward matter of fact manner. It covers all the basic principles for design, has lots of examples from the real world, and ends each chapter with assignments that you can practice on your own.
This should be essential reading for anyone who wants to be a graphic designer. The theory is sound and practical. For example, this book even includes a section on how you can send files to clients or colleagues. This may sound simple, but I can't tell you how many times I've been at the receiving ends of graphic files that can't be used because the fonts were not embedded, or the pictures in the file were not embedded. OMG, the horrors! Seriously, those are the basics things that every decent graphics designer should know. So do yourself a favour and get this book. It's a tremendous resource that will not only educate you to the fundamentals of design, and also the workflow that's practiced by actual professionals in the industry.
