Book Review: ETERNAL: ILya Kuvshinov Illustration Works

ETERNAL: ILya Kuvshinov Illustration Works - 01

Russian comic book artist Ilya Kuvshinov is back again with another compilation of gorgeous portraits, mostly girls. It's still a paperback like the previous artbook MOMENTARY but it's now thicker with 224 pages.

The girls are dreamy, beautiful and very kawaii. Most are head and shoulders illustrations, Many can actually be seen on his DeviantArt and Instagram pages. But it's good to have them collected into a thick volume you can access from your bookshelf easily. The book is almost all art with minimal text, in Japanese and English.

It's a fantastic book that's worth the money.

The last time I wrote about his previous book, he had 1.2 million followers on Instagram. Now he has 1.7 million.

I read this blog at least

I read this blog at least once a week. It is an utter gem of a site and I am so grateful for everything you do, Parka. You shine a spotlight on some amazing stuff.

Despite visiting regularly, I have only ever commented once, and that was on Kushvinov's last book. I have to say I am still a little disturbed by the fact that he paints women who look more like girls. The fact that some of them are wearing few clothes or seem to be in underwear is a little unsettling.

As I said last time, he is immensely talented and his style etc are excellent but he seems to paint some images which seem to echo Natalie Portman's 12 year-old character in Leon, a film which has often been discussed under the heading of sexualisation of children.

Again, maybe I am seeing things that aren't there and maybe I am singling this out when there are other artists in the manga vein who create similar images but I have never felt comfortable with Mr Kushvinov's art.

I don't know. I want to love

I don't know. I want to love this guy's work. His style is gorgeous but it puts at least a toe over the line. I saw someone called Alkemanubis on line who has both feet very much over the line with sexualised imagery anx the comments call it out correctly. Some of Kushvinov's imagery (and I stress some) does seem to be quite young girls in okder clothing and/or poses. Just delicately uncomfortable. Again, I must emphasise that the art skills are first rate.

Another attist I stumbled across is Djamila Knopf who also uses an animd style but whose female characters seem less likely to be from the show-lots-of-flesh camp. They are more grounded and less likely to be seen as sexualised etc

I live the artist Bengal but his art occasionally makes me uncomfortable.
